What Are Card Layers?
Card layers are pieces of cardstock, patterned paper, stamped panels, or other materials cut smaller than your card base and stacked to create borders, mats, and dimension.
Changing the size of each layer can completely change the look of a handmade card. A small difference between layers creates a narrow, delicate border, while a larger difference creates a more noticeable frame.
There’s no single “correct” way to layer a card. These measurements are simply a helpful starting point that takes the guesswork out of choosing sizes.
A2 Card Layer Measurements
A2 is one of the most popular handmade card sizes and is perfect for everything from birthday and holiday cards to thank you cards and everyday designs.
A standard A2 card measures 4¼" x 5½" when folded.
From there, you can gradually reduce the width and height of your panels to create different layered looks. Our printable gives you an easy reference for common A2 card layer measurements so you don't have to calculate them each time.
Slimline Card Layer Measurements
Slimline cards give you a long, narrow canvas that's especially fun for creating scenes, using larger sentiments, or arranging several stamped images across one card.
Because slimline cards have different proportions than traditional A2 cards, having a layer measurement guide nearby can save a lot of time at the paper trimmer.
Use the Slimline section of our printable to quickly choose coordinating panel sizes for your design. Our example uses a base layer of 8.5" x 3.5" when folded.
Mini Slimline Card Layer Measurements
Love the look of Slimline cards but want something a little smaller? Mini Slimline cards offer the same elongated shape in a compact format.
They're wonderful for clean and simple cards, smaller stamped scenes, die cut designs, and quick handmade greetings.

Square Card Layer Measurements
Square cards are another fun alternative to traditional rectangular cards. Their balanced shape works beautifully for centered focal points, large stamped images, wreaths, frames, and symmetrical designs.
The Square Card section of the printable provides common measurements you can use to build coordinating layers without having to stop and calculate each size. Our sample starts with a card base of 6" x 6" when folded, but you can also use this square card section with bases starting at 5" x 5" or even 4" x 4".
Tips for Layering Handmade Cards
Card measurements are only a starting point, feel free to experiment!
Try using a narrow border when you want just a hint of color around your focal panel. Use a wider border when you want your matting cardstock or patterned paper to become a bigger part of the design.
You can also mix things up by combining:
- Solid cardstock and patterned paper
- Stamped panels and die cut layers
- Straight and decorative edges
- Contrasting or tone on tone colors
- Flat layers and dimensional foam adhesive
Once you know your basic card and layer sizes, it's easy to adjust them to create your own favorite combinations.
